Almost everybody has once heard from the brand Skullcandy. If you are looking for a headphone the chances are really high that you will encounter a Skullcandy. With their new Bluetooth headphone they want to make a statement and show that they deliver really good quality that is useable for everybody and that they evolve there technologies in a good way. The Hesh 3 is the big brother of the Hesh 2. A headphone with already a great quality, so in this review I’m going to find out if this one performs even better.
The packaging of this headphone is done really nicely. It is always nice to see that companies put some real effort in how they pack their products. It invites people to buy it and it shows the respect they have for the product.
It is done in a black design box with some useful information on it. By looking at the box itself you can already see what features the headphones have. When opening the box, you see the headphones and there is a little black box in the middle with 2 cables( usb and jack 3.5mm to jack 3.5mm) and some extra information.
This extra information is a quick guide about how to get started with the headphones and the other paper is some technical stuff that is always included in electronics.
I did found one small minus: there is no small pocket to put the headphones in, when not used. This was a part of the skull candy crushers headphones, but to bad there is nothing to put the headphones in when you want to go to somewhere. This makes it much more durable and less sensitive for travelling.
The design of the headphone is really modern. It is all in the same line, which makes it look really quality full and mature. The shiny skulls on the side is a nice subtle touch. On the back of the right ear pad you have the controls. On the front you have the mic and on the bottom of that same ear pad you have the charger, which can just be charged by a normal USB charger (from your smartphone or other electronics) and a jack input if you want to use it without Bluetooth.
The measurements when fully extended are: 1.7 x 7.3 x 7.8 inches (4.32 x 18.5 x 19.81 cm). The weight is 0.227 kg, this is almost 0.050 kg heavier than the Hesh 2. But is still really light, so after wearing a while you won’t even notice the weight. Although it is so light, it feels really solid build.
The ear pads are over-ear and are made of a really comfortable memory foam. They changed from round ear pads to more ellipse-shaped ear pads, which fit way better. They are really comfortable and they are noise-isolating (don’t read not noise canceling because that isn’t). If you compare these ear pads with others you are able to say that they are from great quality, Skullcandy did a great job there! The only minus I found for those ear pads are the movements. I love it when you can turn one end on your head and keep the other over your ear, when you use your headphones when playing music at a party, so you can hear the music in the headphones and the music outside. Or if you need to say a small thing against someone who is sitting near you, you can just turn one side. Another small minus I noticed is that you can turn the ends, but they do not click when they are in the “default” position, this could cause some problems when heavily used, like that they turn to easily.
The controls are really easy to use, there is a small instruction book with on how to use them. If you fool around with them for like 5 minutes, you will have it mastered. The little LED gives you information about pairing, about battery status and about connection. It is also really smart that they put it on the back. This way you have full control on those buttons, you can control it with your thumb and hold it with the rest of your fingers.
The Bluetooth connection is great, it does what you expect, nothing more and nothing less. But when you have an old device that doesn’t support Bluetooth technology, you can also use a jack input. The cable is in the little black box. This is really thoughtful of SkullCandy, so those headphones are compatible for all devices.
If you compare the speakers of the Hesh 2 with those of the Hesh 3, they sized down from 50 mm to 40 mm. Although the quality is still really good. And with the better ear pads, you could say that the overall quality of the sound is much better.
There is a mic implemented in the front. Which is great, so these headphones can be used to call or record.
By scaling the speakers to 40mm it is really important that the quality stays the same or even becomes better. When checking it you can hear that they did a great job doing that. Like almost every consuming oriented headphone company, they increased the basses a little, so when you listen to your music, you get this more awesome sound. If you like to have all frequencies amplified the same, this is maybe not the best headphone you can get, but the difference is not that huge so a normal person won’t bother with it.
This is actually the best feature. If you are looking at a wireless headphones, battery life is one of the most important things you can have. When you go onto the internet you will found that the battery life of the Hesh 2 is 12 hours, which is actually already not that bad. But they were able to increase this to 22 hours straight. Which is a great performance! You can use it a whole day without charging.
There is rapid charge technology, which makes it even better, if you see that the batteries are low and you have a few minutes before leaving you can still charge it and use it for a couple of hours.
All these features make it an outstanding wireless product! If you don’t want to use that much power you can also use the aux cable for even less power dissipation.
You could say that Skullcandy did an amazing job expanding their Hesh collection. Looking at the Hesh 2 they did an awesome upgrade, which make it an outstanding wireless Bluetooth headphone! There are still a few aspects to improve, like a little pocket, a clicking system so when heavily used it will still perform like new. But they did a great job with the battery life, design and audio.
Therefore I want to give the Hesh 3 a golden award.
