Conclusion

After seeing what the synthetic performance of the A10-7870K, let’s have a look at the real world gaming experience that it offers. From the start we knew that since modern games have become extremely demanding our 1080p test results might not be all that good. Even though it just about managed at 1080p, remember that the A10-7870K is for mainly for MOBA gaming at 1080p and not exactly these games at 1080p. So bearing that in mind it din't do that bad even at 1080p, offering a somewhat playable experience. At 720p the A10-7870K performed better than we expected. For those with lower resolution monitors, mainly 720p, are going to enjoy gaming with this APU. We tested a lot of demanding game, both CPU as well as GPU intensive and the APU did not fail to impress us.

The following games were used to test the gaming performance of the A10-7870K:

  • GTA 5
  • Tomb Raider
  • Watch Dogs
  • Metro Last Light Redux
  • Dirt 3
  • Resident Evil
  • Final Fantasy XIV

 

GTA V has been newly released for the PC platform and we estimate that a lot of gamers will be looking for hardware that can run this game smoothly. Many of those gamers are actually on a very tight budget. It's almost close to impossible to get a quad core CPU and a GPU that performs the same or better than the A10-7870K. We lowered the settings to Normal and was able to run this game smoothly, with playable frame rates which resulted in quite a good gaming experience. Out of all the games we tested, GTA V is in fact the newest game and seeing how optimized it is and how well it performed with the A10-7870K, we are excited to see how things further develop.

 

Tomb Raider is extremely intense on the iGPU and not so much on the CPU side of things. We lowered the settings to the Normal preset which is one preset above the lowest settings and ran the in-game benchmark. We were happy to see that the game ran flawlessly and the APU could keep up at both 720p as well as 1080p.

 

Watch Dogs is one game where the APU took a hit. We ran the game at it's lowest settings for our benchmark. There was a lot of stutter. However, we do attribute this to the fact that the game was badly optimized to begin with. This game struggles on high end GPUs as well and it did not surprise us that the A10-7870K would have a hard time running it. At 720p this game is still playable, offering a budget gaming experience.

 

We ran the in-game benchmark for Metro Last Light Redux at the lowest settings possible. It seems like the in-game benchmark never really gave a true indication of in game performance. The above results were collected from the in-game benchmark which seemed to be much more intense than the game itself. With the same settings we recorded a good 10fps boost as compared to the in-game benchmark. So the A10-7870K looks to be quite capable when overclocked. Even though the settings were set to the lowest, we noticed that the in game graphics was still pretty good. We often always look for the best eye candy we can get and forget that it's gameplay and story-line that's truly important. 

 

We cranked up all settings in Dirt 3, running it at Ultra with MSAA set to x8. Dirt 3 is still a very graphically intense game and stressed the iGPU more than any other game. We ran the built in benchmark for Dirt 3. Dirt 3 can be commonly used to test the stability of GPU overclocks. The A10-7870K ran this game effortlessly, managing to pull off 36fps at 1080p with all settings maxed out.

 

All settings were lowered to the lowest in-game settings, turning off FXAA as well. We decided to run the in-game benchmark for Resident Evil 6.  It did struggle a little at 1080p, mainly when there were a lot of zombies on screen but this wasn't the case when we lowered the resolution to 720p.

 

The Final Fantasy XIV benchmark is relatively new and extremely intense on hardware. The Standard preset was chosen and was tested at both 720p as well as 1080p. We notice how the score is almost doubled at 720p. However, this game is playable at 1080p but one would have a much better overall experience running it at 720p.
